NEWS NEW BREWS Afro Caribbean Tropical Destination (4.7%) This session IPA was originally brewed at Volcano Brewing Company in Costa Rica. Grab a can of the South African version of the collab from Banana Jam and select retailers this September, and sip it as you read about the Costa Rican craft beer scene (page 32). Cederberg Brewery Chatterbox Weiss (5 %) The latest addition to the Cederberg range is a krystalweizen available at certain branches of Tops@ Spar. Darling Bone Crusher Marula Noire (5.2%) This is the latest in Darling’s limited release range, where their classics are given a new twist. Here, Bone Crusher gets a facelift, with dark malts and marula fruit added to the standard witbier recipe. If you miss it, look out for the cherry version, coming soon, or the mixed pack of all four speciality Bone Crushers, released in time for Christmas. Frontier Peated Barley Wine (10%) It is yet-to-be-named, but that won’t stop people flocking to Frontier for one of the 500 bottles of this bourbon barrel- aged barley wine, available at the taproom from September. Hey Joe Cherry (4.8%) The latest addition to Hey Joe’s core range is looking to be a winner for spring – a slightly sweet, slightly tart ale that’s been matured on cherries. Check it out on tap at the brewery or look out for bottles in select stores. Honingklip Honey Rock Beer (5% ABV) The Botrivier brewery will once again be brewing their steinbier – where hot rocks are used to heat the mash. Join for the brew on September 7, or keep an eye on their social media to find out when the beer will be released. Kings Craft MonksBrew Dunkel (5%) Envisioned as a small batch, once-off brew, Kings Craft’s dunkel won a silver medal at the SANBT and there’s now discussion of adding it permanently to the range. For now though, it’s on limited release at select Cape Town venues. Richmond Hill x Afro Caribbean Died Pretty (6% ABV) The first version of this brew sadly lived up to its name and thanks to a faulty seal, all 600 litres were lost. Assuming this one makes it into the can, expect a juicy DDH IPA with lots of tropical fruit notes. Soul Barrel x Aegir Project Golden Oats Pale Ale (4.7%) This collab debuted at the Woodstock Winter Beer Festival. Grab some while you can either from Soul Barrel in Franschhoek or one of Aegir’s Cape Town tap rooms. Stash Breweries Trouble Maker Lager (4.5% ABV) The latest beer to be added to Stash’s range is a pale lager. This is the sixth in the series, following on from an APA, session IPA, imperial IPA, amber ale and summer ale. Table 59 Munich Lager (5%) Back by popular demand, this once-a-year brew sold out quickly in 2018. Grab a pint from Table 58’s East London taproom from late September, or try it at their Oktoberfest celebration (see page 6). J-Bay based Brewhaha are releasing a collab hazy pale ale brewed with Reformation Brewery from Woodstock, Georgia. Reformation’s brewer Nick Downes moonlights as a trans-Atlantic pilot and on a recent layover he headed to the Eastern Cape to brew with Brewhaha founder Marius Deetlefs. “We decided to brew a hazy pale ale together as we have never brewed one in J-Bay before,” says Marius. “It was such fun. We laughed a lot, ate a lot, braaied a lot.” Marius heads to the US inOctober to repeat the brew on Reformation’s brewhouse. The beer – Deep South Hazy Pale Ale – will be available exclusively at Brewhaha’s taproom from early September. BREWHAHA RELEASES COLLAB WITH REFORMATION BREWERY ontapmag.co.za | Spring 2019 | 17
