BREW The fifth annual South African National Beer Trophy saw 189 entries from 55 breweries around the country. Trophies were awarded to Afro Caribbean’s Jungle Paradise (Best Hoppy Beer), Zwakala’s Limpopo Lager (Best Light Beer), CBC’s limited edition Doppelbock (Best Dark Beer) and Darling’s Pixie Dust (Best Wheat Beer). The overall prize – Beer of the Year – went to Afro Caribbean for Jungle Paradise. Seventeen gold medals and 46 silver medals were awarded. TAKES TOP PRIZE AT SANBT AFRO CARIBBEAN SAB RELEASES Cape Brewing Company took the top spot in South Africa’s latest beer competition. The Sunday Times Lifestyle Beer Awards were held in Johannesburg in July in conjunction with Makro. Four judges tasted the 81 entries and narrowed the selection down to 10 beers. The top 10 were showcased for consumer tasting at Makro outlets across the country on July 13, where shoppers could vote for their favourite. CBC's Amber Weiss was crowned the overall winner. WINNERS OF FIRST LIFESTYLE BEER SUNDAY TIMES AWARDS ANNOUNCED SAB have worked with a handful of women to create Bold Brew, a pale lager whose ingredients were chosen by the public via a poll run on SAB’s social media pages. SAB teamed up with five women, including master brewer Apiwe Nxusani- Mawela, homebrewer Elbie Louw and SAB maltster Lynn Wicomb-Leibrandt. The limited edition beer was brewed at Brewster’s Craft and is available in 330ml bottles. “We wanted to make a beer that embodied the characteristics of strong, independent women,” said Pranisha Maharaj SAB and AB InBev’s Corporate Reputation Manager. “We gave the public a chance to vote for ingredients that would form part of a ‘secret brew’, and then we put the results into the hands of a team of talented women to create both the beer and its packaging.” The beer is available exclusively at SAB World of Beer in Newtown, Johannesburg.
