Situated along the Mozambiquan border, and covering both Mpumalanga and Limpopo province, there are some notable breweries in the area. It is close enough for a weekend away from Gauteng, but with direct flight routes between Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban to Mbombela’s Kruger International Airport, as well as flights to Hoedspruit, it is within reach of the main hub airports in South Africa. (This is not to mention the international flights.) LAKE UMUZI BREWING COMPANY Situated at the Lake Umuzi waterfront in Secunda, a relatively new player in the South African Craft Beer scene with a rather large selection of beers including non- traditional beers like their Black Cherry Red. ANVIL ALE HOUSE The Ale house is nestled in the quaint town of Dullstroom, a town lovingly referred to as “Scotland’s only outpost in Africa,” due to the rolling hills of the Highlands Meander. They offer traditional foods and a lovely selection of beers. HOPS HOLLOW BREWERY AND GUESTHOUSE Situated on the Longtom Pass and claiming to be the highest brewery in Africa, this guesthouse and brewpub is a must see. With a fine selection of beers and a traditional pub ambiance, you can stay over while exploring the area at a slower pace. SABIE BREWING COMPANY Situated in the town of Sabie, relax with some award-winning beers and hearty meals. Nearing the panoramic routes and Kruger Park gates, this is a good spot to stop after a day of scenic overload. HOEDSPRUIT BREWING CO A craft beer hub with at least 8 beers on tap at any time. Not all the beers are brewed on site, so you can also try beers from other local breweries. Add a full food menu and family friendly entertainment like Putt-Putt and a waterpark and you have a “full day,” sort of stop. ZWAKALA BREWERY In Magoebaskloof, near Tzaneen and Haenertsburg, this rather well-known and charming brewery has lovely outside seating, great beers on tap and for take-away, with good value for money food on offer.
