BASA also officially kicked off the start of the Intervarsity Brewing Competition preparation tour in the Western Cape in April 2023. These visits included the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University. Tours will take in other provinces over the coming months culminating in the main event from the 20th to 22nd of October 2023. The competition will once again be co-hosted by BASA and the Central University of Technology (CUT) and the CUT Hotel School providing the opportunity for university students to embrace beer culture by participating in this fun and challenging contest. The criteria for the competition requires student teams to brew 6 different beers and design an original label. The event takes place over 2 days and features presentations by student brew teams, tasting training, blind tasting by qualified judges, as well as technical presentations by influencers and experts in the craft and commercial brewing space. Participants representing 15 universities joined the event in Bloemfontein in 2022 and home team members could watch the activities live on our YouTube channel. The competition is open to all South African universities and aims to promote craft brewing and beer culture in South Africa under the umbrella of responsible drinking.
