OnTap Magazine
IN BRIEF After many months of planning, Binary Beerworx has opened in the Hartbeespoort area. Run by Jakes and Elbie Louw, well-known faces on the local homebrewing scene, Binary is a chilled brewpub currently open Friday to Sunday, as well as public holidays. On tap you’ll usually find blonde ale, Irish red, APA and IPA plus some experimental brews on rotation. There’s a kids’ play area and occasional live music. Western Cape nanobrewery Lunar Brew is currently between premises, but that’s not stopping them from brewing. They will be releasing one special edition small batch beer a month exclusively at Lilypatrick Brewery in Stellenbosch. Look out for American browns ales, best bitters, NEIPAs and Doppelbocks throughout the winter. Two South African breweries won accolades at this year’s Craft Beer Marketing Awards. Known as the Crushies, the awards recognise outstanding design work, whether it’s on labels, taprooms or social media marketing. Tolokazi Beer won a platinum in the Best Packaging Design for Bottles category for their labels, designed by Satta Design. Cape Town’s Local Brewery & Co. also took a platinum in the Best Bottle Design Category for their labels designed by Daniel Ting Chong. TAKEMEDALS AT THE CRAFT BEER MARKETINGAWARDS Devil’s Peak Lucy Goes Cold (6% ABV) South Africa’s first ‘Cold IPA’ is available in 330ml cans while stocks last. What is a cold IPA we hear you ask? It takes the hopping schedule of an IPA, adds a few adjuncts, ferments with lager yeast but at the fermentation temperature of a Kölsch or California Common. So it’s kind of the love child of an IPL and a NEIPA, if that helps at all… Nova Beer Project Road Less Travelled Hoppy Lager (4.5% ABV) This dry-hopped lager is the second release from Anja van Zyl’s new brand. The beer uses Saphir for dry-hopping, lending notes of sweet citrus and lemongrass. According to the brewer, the beer is best enjoyed in wide open spaces, so grab a can or two and head out into the wilderness. Honingklip Brewery Burning Bush Brown Ale (5% ABV) Following huge forest fires earlier this year, the Honingklip team decided to turn a negative into a positive, taking 2kg of burnt protea bush sticks and flowers and adding them to the boil in a brown ale. Taste the result – a lightly smokey beer with a honeybush flavour – on tap at the Bot River brewery. Soul Barrel Lager of Origin This unfiltered, rustic lager is the latest in Soul Barrel’s series of beers brewed with 100% South African grown ingredients. It’s a Helles Kellerbier brewed with floor- malted barley, and hops grown in the brewery garden. Look out also for their new Oatmeal Stout (5% ABV). NEW BREWS 20 | Winter 2022 | ontapmag.co.za
