BASAwashonouredwiththeopportunitytosponsorandpresent two awards at this year’s African Beer Cup in May, including the African Celebration Award and the Non-Alcoholic Award. The African Celebration Award recognises the best beer in Africa using traditionally African ingredients. These can include a range of ingredients, including the likes of malted sorghum and maize as found in South African Umqombothi, through to the coffee and hibiscus flowers that are used in Nigerian craft beer blends. It gave us great pleasure to announce that this year’s African Celebration Award was won by the team at Okavango Craft Brewery, all the way from Botswana. We were also deeply inspired by the second category award thatwepresented, whichhighlightedour industry’s commitment to provide quality craft beer brews and experiences to all consumers, especially in the shape of non-alcoholic beers which provide a critical step towards differentiating beer as the drink of choice for all occasions. It gave us immense pleasure to announce that this year’s silver winner of the Non-Alcoholic Category Award went to HEINEKEN South African for their Heineken 0.0. AFRICANBEER CUP by Alderman James Vos, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management. He was thrilled to learn all about our local beer industry, BrewRoutes and beer tourism. He has committed to growing this sector with us, especially in the Western Cape. On the second day of the exhibit, we were joined by Minister of Tourism, Lindiwe Sisulu, who also showed an interested in supporting and growing our local beer industry, through beer tourism and our carefully curated BrewRoutes. BASA plans to engage with Minister Sisulu in the months to come, in order to continue building on these impactful conversations, to better serve and grow beer tourism within our local beer industry. 10 | Winter 2022 | ontapmag.co.za
