MASH OUT Since we’re celebrating industry heroes in this issue we wanted to find out who inspires our readers, so we asked DAVID THURLWELL Beer enthusiast, Montagu Danie Odendaal because I don't know of anyone else in the industry who could talk for 45 minutes about bubbles and head. Also for always being willing to share his wealth of knowledge. SANDILE MAGWAZA Brewer at TNT Brewery, Johannesburg Holger Meier because he's been genuine to the game and his contribution to the brewing industry hasn't changed ever since. MEGAN GEMMELL Owner and head brewer at Clockwork Brewhouse, Pietermaritzburg Ben Lamaletie. If it wasn't for his love of brewing, his eagerness to help others get into the industry and his generosity, I probably wouldn't be a brewer today. He and SAB sponsored malt, hops and yeast to the university when I first started out, and he even found a few dud kegs for me so I could build my first homebrew system at home. And he founded the inter-varsity homebrew comp which is where a lot of us started out. Thanks Ben! ELBIE AND JAKES LOUW Owners of Binary Brew Worx, Hartbeespoort Oom Theo de Beer, founder of Anvil Ale House in Dullstroom . All those awards, all the advice and for his love for the craft. SIYABONGA NTSHANGASE Brewer and cider- maker, Hammarsdale Apiwe Nxusani- Mawela and Ndumiso Madlala. They have played a huge part in transforming the craft industry. It would be nice to see them both on the cover at the same time! ROB GREEN Beer enthusiast and occasional homebrewer, Knysna Karel Bruwer of Red Bridge in Knysna. He took ownership a few years ago. He has upped the standard of beer at the brewery and has thrown his heart and soul into the business. He’s never scared to learn from brewers like Dave McRae, who helped Mitchell’s get going and Marcus Meunier, the original brewer for Barrington’s. He’s always learning, trying new things, promoting the beer industry and is full of enthusiasm. GARTH MANTER Beer enthusiast, Cape Town Greg Casey is my hero. He’s one of the best brewers out there.
