It is one of Cape Town’s most vibrant areas. Just 5km from the city centre, Woodstock, and neighbouring Salt River, manage to meld their mechanics’ workshops and textile factories with some of the city’s hippest hangouts. Semi-gentrified, the streets see ultra-modern coffee roasteries and old school Gatsby cafes sitting side-by-side. The area is known for its breweries and distilleries and for its eclectic restaurants, from West African take-out joints to some of the country’s swankiest eateries. But above all it is known for its artists. From the row of carpentry stores selling well-priced furniture crafted from reclaimed wood, to bright and minimalist galleries showcasing contemporary sculptures, paintings and fashion. And you don’t have to spend anything to appreciate some of the finest art these semi-industrial suburbs have to offer. Lucy Corne took a wander to admire the magnificent street art of Salt River and Woodstock, stopping off for the odd glass of malt-based refreshment along the way.
