60 | Summer 2024 | ontapmag.co.za 4.0 NOVA BEER PROJECT PALE ALE | 4.8% ABV BREW REVIEWS PANELISTS: Megan Gemmell, Brian Leopold, Troye May, Chris Roth, Michelle Seale, Olga de Smidt, Dion Van Huyssteen, and Chantell Van Niekerk. 3.8 The beer pours golden with a white frothy head that smells of citrus and more specifically naartjies when poured. It is crisp with a subtle bitterness that allows for it to be consumed in large quantities. This is a very sessional Pale Ale that you can enjoy next to the pool or braai. The design of the beer can is very interesting and inspired by the Art Deco style. The description on the beer can is exactly what you can expect when you drink the beer. EDITOR’S NOTE: A panel consisting of eight experienced individuals review beers for the magazine. Panel members do not necessarily review a beer for every issue, but all names are listed. Please note: if any brewery would like a beer of theirs to be reviewed, they will need to contact On Tap editors directly (editor@ontapmagazine.com ). RICHMOND HILL BREWING COMPANY PSYCHIC MIGRATION HOPPY RED ALE | 4.8% ABV The award-winning brewery Richmond Hill Brewing Company (RHBC) has brought back an old label but with a different beer style. The Psychic Migration used to be a vanilla Old Ale but the label is now being used for their latest release: a hoppy red ale. The hopping done has made for a really unique red ale which brings out a lot of flavours not commonly found in the style. The aroma is more prominent with regards to the hop notes bringing on light grape, some naartjie, and stonefruit notes. The flavour is more malt-forward, which is expected from a red ale, and the hop notes that were listed earlier are still there for the palate, but the stonefruit falls away. It’s a very tasty and sessionable beer that went down a treat! 3.9 DEVILS PEAK BREWING COMPANY/CANDY CANE PROJECT LUCY LOVES CANDY HAZY IPA | 4% ABV When it comes to hazy IPA's, Devils Peak took the style to heart and created a massive fan favourite in their "Juicy Lucy." This beer has been around from the start of the "New England IPA" revolution in South Africa, and they have since made other variations within the "Lucy" category that they started. Some may remember Lucy Goes Cold which was a cold IPA that was well received by any fortunate enough to have tried it. This time around though, the Lucy Loves Candy is a collaboration between Devils Peak and the Candy Cane Project. This sessionable hazy IPA sits at 4% ABV and gives a very flavourable aroma with passion fruit and citrus notes of naartjie and orange. The aroma pulls through to the palate but also adds a light raspberry taste as well. A great drink that will be enjoyed by many. Let's hope this one sticks around for a while as it doesn't seem to last in my fridge.
