Lacking snow, reindeers and fir trees, South Africans have developed a Christmas tradition of a braai with family and friends, often enjoyed with a beer. Sure, beer is a great drink for adults – and it has to be consumed with adult common sense. That means drinking responsibly and inmoderation. The beer industry is committed to encouraging responsible drinking behaviour and has spent years developing and improving the no- or low-alcohol beer options. Apart from moderation, the main principles of responsible drinking are: don’t drink alcohol on an empty stomach; to drink a glass of water with your beer (don’t over-indulge because you are thirsty); and never drink and drive. In South Africa, the legal limit for alcohol content allowed for drivers is 0.05%. It is important to note that even a small amount, such as 350ml of beer or a tot of brandy, could potentially exceed this limit depending on an individual's metabolism. It is crucial to be mindful of these regulations to ensure the safety of yourself and others on the road. The Beer Association of South Africa (BASA), as well as each of our members, are determined to minimize the harmful consequences of alcohol abuse: underage drinking, excessive drinking, and drinking and driving. To raise awareness about the harmful effects of alcohol abuse, the industry has implemented several educational campaigns. These initiatives include training programs for liquor traders, which consist of modules focused on responsible trading and consumption practices. By educating those involved in the sale and distribution of alcohol, we aim to promote a culture of moderation and safety within the industry. There is also the Drive Sharp campaign that highlights the potential consequences of drunk driving. BASA and brewers also co-operate with law enforcement authorities and community organizations to increase consumer education on responsible consumption. The advancements in brewing science have reformed the production of low and non-alcoholic beers, allowing manufacturers to preserve flavours while reducing alcohol content. This innovative approach marks a significant departure from traditional methods, opening new possibilities for the beer industry. These processes include reverse osmosis, vacuum distillation or limiting fermentation. According to Statista, by 2023 non-alcoholic beer accounted for 5.5% of global beer sales. More people are drinking it as an enjoyable, responsible and healthier option to full-alcohol beer. BASA and our members wish you a very enjoyable festive season. Please share our message on responsible drinking with your friends and family to keep them safe over this period. HO HO HOLD OFF ON BINGE DRINKING THIS FESTIVE SEASON ontapmag.co.za | Summer 2024 | 9
