For the first time, BASA was a proud sponsor of the Intervarsity Brewing Competition which was hosted at Bloemfontein’s Central University of Technology (CUT) in October. The event was held in partnership with South African Breweries (SAB) while Heineken South Africa, the FoodBev SETA and the Centre for Applied Food Sustainability and Biotechnology (CAFSaB) were also proud sponsors of this year’s event. Students from South African tertiary institutions were invited to demonstrate their ingenuity and brewing skills by creating their own category-specific brews, which were then evaluated according to the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) guidelines. The competition aims to empower young brewers through first-hand exposure to world-class brewing techniques. Students are also given access to stalwarts in the brewing industry for guidance and mentoring, with the hope that they will be motivated to one-day pursue a career in an industry that provides significant economic opportunities. The entire BASA team was thrilled to join the event, which celebrated its 15th anniversary and saw 15 universities competing against each other, with the goal of being crowned the best student beer makers in the country. The afternoon before the competition kicked off, BASA also sponsored a beer tasting and tour of East End Brewery that was attendedby competing university teams and competition partners. It was inspiring to engage with young brewers and find out what got them into brewing beer and we hope to see them working at South Africa’s big beer manufacturers or starting their own breweries in the future. The winners were announced on the Saturday evening, with 1000 Hills Chef School from Durban claiming two awards for the Best Sour Beer and the Best Low Alcohol Beer. while the Best India Pale Ale and Best Lager went to the University of Cape Town.
