It ticks a lot of boxes when looking for a great summer beer. Witbier The witbier’s name is largely attributed to its distinctive pale colour – not exactly white but more of a hazy pale straw. The most common historical varieties were from the Leuven area, just outside Brussels, and a classic commercially available example is Hoegaarden. Very much known for the addition of coriander seeds and bitter orange peel added into the boil, a witbier is refreshing, hazy, spicy, zesty and crisp. It also contains a fairly high ratio of unmalted wheat, which contributes to the haziness and colour. Another flavour component comes from the yeast which remains in suspension. It is certainly a great style to discover this summer, if you haven’t yet. On the summer ale trail My plan is to drive cross country quenching my thirst at some great breweries along the way. But whether you are travelling around or staying local, there is a fairly good spread of these two styles around the country.
