Afro Caribbean Spring in Chenin and Spring in Chardonnay (6.5% ABV) This duo of sours were aged in Chenin and Chardonnay barrels respectively. Almost a year in the making, the beers were released on 1 December and will be available in 500ml bottles and on tap at Banana Jam Café, while stocks last. Mad Giant Jozi Sunset (7.5% ABV) Inspired by the legendary Pliny the Elder from California’s Russian River Brewing Company, this is the first ever double IPA to come out of Jo’burg- based Mad Giant. The beer will be available through Mad Giant’s Extra Fresh outlets, from their taproom and on draught at Capital Craft. Swagga Cherry Blonde (3.8% ABV) Slightly sweet and low in alcohol, Swagga’s blonde ale with a twist of cherry is released just in time for summer. For now, it’s exclusively available at Swagga Breweries restaurant and bar, both canned and on-tap. Soul Barrel Candy Cone IPA (5.2% ABV) Always a cheerleader for local ingredients, Soul Barrel’s Nick Smith has released a new IPA showcasing South African hops. “Candy Cone is brewed to bring out the best of our local hops, with multiple dry hop additions during fermentation,” says Nick. “Classic South African hop flavours of granadilla, Chenin Blanc and dark berries layer on top of a creamy, juicy malt base that provides a soft, pillowy texture.” Look out too for Soul Barrel’s Bourbon Wood Old Ale (11% ABV) a blended, barrel- aged English Old Ale. With a flavour profile including bourbon, dark fruit, caramel and subtle oak notes, it’s ideal for ageing until winter, or if you can’t wait that long, for drinking on Christmas day and pretending you’re at the North Pole. KAROO CRAFT BREWERIES TAKES OVER PRODUCTION FOR TUK TUK Karoo Craft Breweries has taken over production for Tuk Tuk Microbrewery in Franschhoek. Tuk Tuk’s beers were previously handled by Cape Brewing Company in Paarl. The Franschhoek microbrewery is now under new management, and its range of beers is in the hands of KCB’s head brewer Paul Bosman. Paul continues at KCB, brewing on Tuk Tuk’s 250-litre system two days per week. Tiny Keg Limited Edition Six-Pack This is the third annual mixed-pack release frommobile canning company Tiny Keg. This edition features an Oktoberfest Lager, Sorghum Sour IPA, American Amber Ale, Tropical IPA, Witbier and a Pastry Stout, from six different breweries from across SA. The limited edition box set is available from Takealot, Beverage Club and select craft beer-loving liquor stores, retailing at R220. Check out our review of no. 14 on page 59.
