MASH OUT We’re pretty pleased with our first collab brew, which was inspired by 90s beer trends and named for a (ahem) classic Backstreet Boys song. So we asked our social media fans: MICHAEL GOTTSACKER Beer lover & On Tap reader, St. Paul, USA “All Summer Long” (The Beach Boys) – A lighter ABV session brew intended for responsible, abundant consumption during the summer months. JAKO KERSOP Brewer at Famous Brew & Still, Bloemfontein All Star (Smash Mouth) – it would be an African lager made with Southern Star hops. TIMOTHY R. MOODIE Beer aficionado, Minneapolis, USA “Black Coffee in Bed” (Squeeze) for a stout – I’m thinking something light like a dry Irish stout that you can sip in bed with your breakfast. JOSEPH MAKUNGWE Bartender at Banana Jam Café, Cape Town I’d do a session IPA and call it Don’t Stop (Believing)… CURTIS MURRAY Part time homebrewer, full time beer geek, Johannesburg Mostly because of the name (but also because we don’t see enough of the style here): Bittersweet Symphony Red IPA. ANAIA DOS SANTOS Craft Brewers Powwow & Bevplus administrator, Cape Town Bitter Sweet Symphony – a Belgian Pale Ale. GERT JANZEN Homebrewer & beer lover, Pretoria I’d make Bittersweet Symphony Weissbier. SOME SONG NAMES JUST LEND THEMSELVES WELL TO BECOMING BEERS NAMES, BUT THE MOST POPULAR OF ALL WAS BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY BY THE VERVE. ONLY PROBLEM WAS THAT PEOPLE COULDN’T DECIDE WHICH BEER STYLE BEST SUITED THE SONG… AND THE WINNER IS… All of the entries to this issue’s Mash Out section went into a big virtual pot, with one winner drawn at random.
