NEWS NEW BREWS Jack Black Super Crush (3% ABV) Jack Black’s limited release beer for summer is a low-ABV grapefruit radler – a lager infused with citrus that promises to be “not too bitter and not too sweet”. Available in 330ml bottles or on tap at the brewery. The 400 Brewing Frost Hammer (5.8% ABV) Frost Hammer was 400 Brewing’s first ever beer, back when they were based in Jo’burg, brewing on the 400-litre system that gave the brand its name. Designed to replicate a lager back when they didn’t have lagering facilities, it’s a smashable hybrid brew that’s perfect for summer. That Brewing Co. Alpha Hops range (5.8%) The Durban based brewery has released a limited edition single hop IPA series, each showcasing a different hop – Citra, Simcoe, Centennial and Columbus. There are just 1000 cans of each although the plan is to re-brew the fan favourite. Jump Brewing Endless Vibrations Brut IPA (5.7% ABV) This is the fourth release from Jump, a dry and fruity brut IPA with lots of peach and mango on the nose. Remember the brand’s motto – “here for a good time, not for a long time” and order some from their website before it’s all gone. The Cape Town Brewery Dry Irish Stout (4.2%) The first release from the new Cape Town gypsy brewery is a smooth and quaffable dry stout that proves dark beers are not just for winter. The “shake and pour” can is fun to play around with and if you get it right you’ll have a smooth and velvety nitro stout to sip on. The Kennel Hop it and Pop it (5% ABV) Part of Kennel’s latest batch of new releases, Hop It and Pop It is a dry hopped sour IPA aged in a brandy barrel for 14 months – get it while it lasts! Agar’s x Goodwill Brewery Savage Brut IPA (6% ABV) Agar’s first ever seasonal release is a bone dry Brut IPA hopped with Nelson Sauvin, Citra and Galaxy, developed with local homebrewer Crighton Goodwill. Grab some cans from their online store or from Best Craft Beer. Also look out for Agar’s imperial stout duo – one aged in kegs, the other aged for five months in port barrels. Saggy Stone x The Kennel Brewery The Mystery Hop (6.4% ABV) This first time collab from the two Western Cape breweries is a hazy IPA showcasing a hop neither brewer had used before. But to find out what it is, you’ll just have to grab a can… Soul Barrel Live Culture Grand Cru (8.5% ABV) Borrowed from winemakers, the term Grand Cru typically represents a special blend or release of the highest quality. This is a special edition of Soul Barrel’s Live Culture, using floor-malted barley produced at the brewery. It’s spent months in French oak and was then blended with citrus fynbos and hops. Get some from the brewery from December 4. ontapmag.co.za | Summer 2021 | 17
