It celebrates the heritage of barley growing in South Africa and can be seen on the two medals on the labels, with their GPS co-ordinates. OT: How has the beer been received so far? KM: The beer has been received well and is showing steady growth. The alcohol bans have made launching a new 100% malt beer challenging, but I am very happy with the final product and I’m confident it can find a place in the South African beer scene over time. OT: How did you get started with SAB? KM: I started brewing in 2011 with the UCT Brewing team as part of the Intervarsity Brewing Competition run by SAB. Winning the competition and several categories in 2012 improved my visibility to the business and I started a process engineering traineeship with SABMiller in 2014. I spent the next two years travelling to our African breweries on multiple projects while completing my Diploma in Brewing. At the end of 2015, I was appointed as a process engineer at the Rosslyn Brewery where I continued to train and develop as a brewer and officially “checked out” as a brewer in 2017. OT: What have been your career highlights so far? Castle Double Malt is definitely my biggest highlight due to the depth of involvement throughout the whole process, but 2M Flow in Mozambique also holds a special place for working on that project from start to finish. The opportunity came up in August this year to become the Brewing Manager of Newlands Brewery, and it was too good to pass up. I missed the daily production and being close to the brewing process. And it is in my home town, an absolutely beautiful city. OT: In a dream world, what one product would you develop and launch through SAB/ ABI? In a dream world I would love to develop and launch a session pale ale showcasing our home-grown ingredients; a crisp but refreshing balance of home-grown malts and maize with a fruity and lively dry hopped contribution from some of the newer varieties being developed at our hop farms.
