OnTap Magazine
In this spring edition of On Tap, the Beer Association of South Africa (BASA) is ex- cited to celebrate growth. It is, after all, the time of year when we think about renewal and regeneration. September is celebrated as the month of spring, and it is also tourism and heritage Month. During the month, the South African government provides a heightened focus on the importance of the tourism sector to the South African economy and reflect on our wealth in diversity and cultural background. In the following pages you can read about how beer is an underutilised contributor to the tourist economy - and how the industry is working to change this. Slowly, many international tourists are recognising our local craft breweries as worthy destinations, as well as valuing the ways in which beer is a truly African tradition with a rich history. To facilitate growth in the beer industry, BASA also prioritises the professional growth of individuals. Training programs that equip talented young people to become beer ambassadors, guides or cicerones are making sure that the beer service offered is not only world-class, but also uniquely South African. We have so much history and heritage to offer - and the friendly, welcoming way in which we do it, sets us apart as a destination worth visiting. The increasing number of female brewers and beer enthusiasts has been noticeable for some time now. This past Women's Day, on the 9th of August, BASA commemorated this trend with a beer tasting event tailored specifically for women. Beer is a beverage with a rich and intricate profile that can be enjoyed by all. As it sheds its outdated image as a drink solely for men, the valuable contributions of women in the beer industry deserve recognition and celebration. Another type of growth to be concerned with is, of course, economic growth. The beer industry, as a big employer in South Africa, is invested in the sustainability and general advancement of the sector. One way through which this can be achieved, is through a stable, inflation-related excise regime. You can read more about the potential of this, for craft brewers especially, in this edition. When you are enjoying your spring beer - like a light, crisp and cold ale - lift a glass to the season of growth and acknowledge the ways in which beer as an economic force and as a cultural expression, is changing and contributing.
