THE CRAFT BREWERS ASSOCIATION AND BEER ROUTE LAUNCH TOUR GUIDE TRAINING PROGRAM The Certified Craft Beer Guide Training Course was recently launched with the first in-person training taking place on the 6th of August at Lilypatrick Craft Brewery in Stellenbosch. The training is aimed at tour guides in South Africa to enable them to assist craft beer tourists more effectively at finding quality craft beer around South Africa. The CBASA and Beer Route have set a target of training 500 tour guides in the first year of the program. https://cbasa.org/ ALES FOR TAILS RAISES NEARLY R200 000 FOR THE SPCA On 3 August 2024, the Kloof & Highway SPCA hosted the highly successful 7th edition of "Ales for Tails," a fundraiser that brought together beer enthusiasts and animal lovers for a great cause. Homebrewers from across the region, including the Durban Home Brewers and Wort Hog Brewers from Gauteng, pledged an impressive 63 different brews, contributing a total of 1,475 litres of beer. The event, which has grown in popularity each year, raised a remarkable R197,033.09 to support the vital work of the SPCA. This collaboration highlights the community's commitment to both craft brewing and animal welfare. https://www.alesfortails.co.za/ FIRST ALL LADIES HOMEBREW INVITATIONAL COMPETITION! National Women’s Day, 9th of August 2024 saw the inaugural All Ladies Homebrew Competition take place at 4 Degrees Taproom in Salt River. The brain child of Andrew Dell, and the Mother City Beer Project, the concept was initiated to encourage greater participation by women in the homebrew and competition spaces. 20 online entries equated to 19 beers presented on the day for judging, from 23 participants. Most of the entrants were brewing and entering a competition for the first time! 6 guest judges were asked to give input, but the beers were judged in a “people choice” format. The inaugural event was won by Taryn Stacey with her Belgian Blonde Ale with Strawberries. Prizes were sponsored by Fools and Fans Festival, South Pole Studios, BevPlus, Aegir Project, 4 Degrees Taproom and Urban Playground. ontapmag.co.za | Spring 2024 | 15
