ERICA BREYTENBACH Winelands MICHOLL THOM Pretoria JOJO SEIMA Johannesburg RYNO MAYER Winelands EMMA NASH Cape Town PETER METELERKAMP Cape Town As the cold winter temperatures are fading, my beer cravings shift from bold, sweet stouts to something a bit lighter in colour (and mouthfeel), without compromising on flavour. This is why spring time is perfect for wheat beers! The Weiss and Witbier locally available all have lots of unique flavours, and no two are the same. Absolutely an IPA - especially considering all the variations available - from dry IPAs, cold IPAs, or even double IPAs. There are still some colder days, where a Bock fits in perfectly as well. Märzen would be my beer of choice, with its moderate malty richness, boasting delightful notes of bready goodness and subtle bitterness. Spring is the best time to explore the hoppy side of the beer world. The vast flavour range in IPA's promote the blend of floral, citrus, and tropical fruit flavours that spring to mind when thinking of the season. Nothing is quite as lekker as a fresh hop bomb of hazy IPA on a sunny day. Spring is a time for IPAs especially the floral and fruity ones. However, my choice of beer for spring is an ice cold juicy pale ale! As an IPA lover, it is a biased YES! As the weather warms up, I would be leaning to more hops for fresher tastes and served colder than ideal, for those first few thirst-quenching sips.
