FEATURE E arlier this year, inApril, HEINEKEN announced the completion of its acquisition of Distell and Namibia Breweries Limited. These two entities were merged with HEINEKEN South Africa to form HEINEKEN Beverages, which reflects the new company’s multi-category portfolio and dedication to providing consumers across the continent with high-quality beverages.. By combining the strengths of all three entities, this merger leverages expertise and resources to foster growth, create jobs, and contribute to the overall economic development of the region. HEINEKEN as part of the merger conditions has offered an ambitious and comprehensive package of public interest commitments that will support South Africa’s economic growth which is a vote of confidence in the South African economy and includes: • A new employee share ownership scheme called Bokamoso, which launched in July and will transfer more than R3bn of equity to employees. • Ambitious investment plans ofmore than R10bn over 5 years to maintain and grow the productive capacity of operations and facilities in South Africa andmaintain a modern, efficient, sustainable, and well-capitalised business. • Earmarking more than R5bn towards two Greenfield projects to construct a new brewery and maltery to reduce reliance on imports, bolster the local value chain, and create both permanent and temporary job opportunities across the sector. • Tavern transformation programme worth R175m investment to create safe, responsible, and sustainable businesses that have a positive impact on society. • The establishment of a supplier development fund of R400m to invest in small business enterprises and historically disadvantaged- controlled suppliers, and contributions of R200m to promote localisation and growth initiatives within South Africa • Establishing an Innovation, Research and Development Hub for the Africa region based in South Africa.
