University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN-PMB) - some of last year's winners Part of this year's preparation - off-flavour sensory training with students from the universities of Limpopo, Pretoria, South Africa, North-West, Johannesburg and the Vaal University of Technology 100 Hills Chef School - a winning team from the 2022 competition An event that has become a staple in the South African beer industry’s diary is the annual Intervarsitybrew: Brewing and Tasting Challenge where university students enter their beers hoping to be crowned the best in the competition. This year will be the 16th edition of this fun and challenging competition which will take place 20 to 22nd October in Bloemfontein. This event will be co-hosted by BASA and the Central University of Technology (CUT) and will see 17 universities compete against each other over the 2 days across 6 beer categories, as well as being judged on a beer label they have designed. The event will also include presentations from student brew teams, tasting training and technical presentations by influencers and experts in the craft and commercial brewing space. BASA is proud to once again be sponsoring two additional award categories focusing on the best low-alcohol beer entries. This is in line with our continued commitment to promoting beer as a drink of moderation that can be enjoyed safely and responsibly. We look forward to joining the other sponsors of the event namely, South African Breweries, Heineken South Africa, Craft Brewers Association of South Africa, FoodBev SETA and Lallemand South Africa, university teams and judges in October to recognize and celebrate new entrants in the brewing industry and to taste the exciting brews created by beer-loving students. BASA will be posting on all the activities over the two days, so we encourage those interested in following the competition to follow our social media pages – you can find the Beer Association of South Africa on Facebook, Twitter (@BeerSA_org) and Instagram (@beer_southafrica).
