On Tap is South Africa’s first dedicated beer publication - a quarterly magazine aimed at craft brewers, homebrewers, beer fanatics and those just beginning to dip their proverbial toe into the mash tun. The views expressed in individual articles are the personal views of the authors and are not necessarily shared by the editor, the advertisers or the publisher. No articles may be reproduced in any way without the written consent of the publisher. Beer Country is what happens when two guys spend way too much time obsessing about beer and food around a firepit. After a TV show and two successful fire food recipe books, they know a thing or two about cooking over the coals. They are always keen to share some fireside tips and tricks, usually with a beer in hand. Check out a classic potjie recipe from their latest book on page 30. Greg Gilowey and Karl Tessendorf (AKA Beer Country) Shortly after starting homebrewing in 2011, Carl realised that beer was something special. He and four friends founded their own microbrewery in 2014, and Carl continues making beers to this day under the 400 Brewing Co. name. In this edition of his Beerginner’s Guide column (page 42), Carl introduces us to everyone’s favourite beer ingredient: hops. Carl Nienaber Marcel is a beer geek who’s been brewing for over a decade and still gets things wrong. He teaches brewing, writes, and spends more money on beer than is wise. Find him at beginnerbrewer.com . You can listen to his podcast about beer and geekery: Scum, Beer & Villainy, on iTunes. Marcel is our in-house homebrew expert; he takes a look at the logistics of using fruit in beer on page 44. Marcel Harper Rob is a home brewer, BJCP beer judge and all-round beer geek. He loves everything about beer, be it the science, the history, or the practical nature. His life quest is to brew the perfect English Bitter. Rob is our resident list maker – check out his compilation of proudly South African beverages on page 52. Rob Cass Tim Webb is a UK-based international beer writer whose books include The World Atlas of Beer (Octopus: 3rd edition 2020 UK, 2021 US), co-written with Stephen Beaumont, and Beer Breaks (CAMRA Books: May 2022). In his first piece for On Tap, Tim tackles the topic of climate change and how it affects the brewing industry. Check it out on page 24. Tim Webb Craig started his journey in beer as a homebrewer in a London bedsit in 2004. He is a partner at Neelsie Travel and it was in 2017 that he fused his passion for tourism and craft beer to create the Beer Route, an organisation set up to promote craft beer tourism in South Africa. He is also the co-founder of Lunar Brew and current chairperson of the Helderberg Homebrew Club. Check out Beer Route at www.beerroute.co.za . Craig Claassen 4 | Spring 2022 | ontapmag.co.za
