HAZELDEAN OPENS NEW BREWERY AND TAPROOM BARRINGTON’S SEEKS HEAD BREWER BREWER MOVES After years of planning and construction, Hazeldean Brewing Company has opened their own facility just outside Pretoria. Construction on the brewery and restaurant began in late 2019 - just in time to be stopped by Covid. Hazeldean had been operating as a contract brewery since first launching in 2015. The new brewery is found on the family cattle farm in east Pretoria. It's a chilled, family-friendly venue with good food and plenty of beer (plus a small selection of wine and spirits). There’s a large kids’ area and lawns to run around on as well as walking and mountain biking trails on the farm. The taproom and restaurant are open Thursday to Sunday. Situated in Plettenberg Bay, Barrington’s Brewery is seeking a head brewer to take over its 500-litre brewhouse. Applicants should have a minimum of three years’ experience in commercial brewing and ideally hold a relevant technical degree or diploma in engineering or brewing. Responsibilities will include recipe development, bottling, lab work, managing distribution, client liaison and of course brewing the five flagship beers as well as contract brands for various Garden Route venues. Recent references are essential. To apply send CV and references to Simon Ash: eatsimonash@gmail.com . Woodstock Brewery’s Etienne Louw has moved to Franschhoek to take the head brewer position at Hey Joe Brewery. Hey Joe’s Chris Greyling is moving to northern Bali to take on a senior brewing position at a brand-new brewery on the Indonesian island. In another international move, Stefan Wiswedel, founder of Little Wolf and former head brewer at Hoghouse, has left the South African brewing scene to take up a position at Denmark’s To Øl Brewery. Ross Eaton, former head brewer at Barrington’s has moved to Nigeria to join the team at Bature Brewery, leaving the position vacant at the Garden Route brewery. 12 | Spring 2022 | ontapmag.co.za
