MASH OUT We’ve spent most of this issue celebrating the past five years, but now it’s time to look to the future, so we asked: JOHAN AURIACOMBE Owner of Capital Craft, Pretoria I think over the next five years we can look forward to beer festivals returning in full steam and through these festivals many new creative beer drinkers are born… So cheers to the next five years! TROYE MAY Founder of the Beertime podcast, Cape Town I expect the knowledge base to increase. We will have more “professional” opinions which will be warranted from their official and licensed training (BJCP, Cicerone, IBD, etc). There will be more reputable names and associations that will be able to speak with authority on certain subject matter relating to beer. LAZARUS RURACA GM & head brewer at Paternoster Brewery, Paternoster I am hoping we will not have any more hard lockdowns – fingers crossed. In the next five years I really hope to see craft beer being accessible in the townships and also hope to see programmes that will educate people about craft beer and the various beer styles. RYAN PHILLIPS Owner of Brewcraft, Pretoria We have naturally seen a growth in the number of new homebrewers since the start of the alcohol bans so I believe craft breweries will also see a growth in sales in the near future…if they are able to stick it out financially under these tough times. JC STEYN Head brewer at Devil’s Peak Beer Co., Cape Town I hope to see regional breweries thriving and the brew pub model becoming more and more popular, offering excellent quality at source. I suspect three or four nationally distributed breweries remaining and growing their consumer base as they compete for space with the big beer brands. PAUL TEN HOORN BOER Head brewer at That Brewing Co., Durban Better appreciation for canned beers! We were lucky to be involved in educating the customers at Unity bar about craft beer when we first launched That Brewing Co. Hopefully we will play a role in canned beers. I also hope that in five years’ time my eldest son starts appreciating going to work with dad. NIALL COOK Founder/owner of Richmond Hill Brewing Co., Port Elizabet h I think there will be more of a shift to support local, meaning less widespread distribution and more sales direct from the brewery. And I hope to see more craft beer drinkers emerging. There is something for everyone in craft beer and I hope more and more start to realise that. LYNNAE ENDERSBY Owner of BeerLab, Cape Town As always I would love to see more ladies brewing. I’m really excited about the Nova Beer Project from Anja van Zyl. And the other thing I’d like to see is more beer in cans please. Hoping to see many of the smaller breweries putting their product into cans. Mobile canning is a concept I have always loved. 72 | Spring 2021 | ontapmag.co.za
