DAVE A PINT WITH DL: You travel and golf a lot, what do you think of Parkview Golf Course? BK: The thing about Parkview is that it is a great place to have beer. In my opinion it’s one of the top five golf courses to drink at. DL: I seem to remember that you have an ‘alcohol background’. Didn’t you work for Distell? BK: Correct Dave, I actually was a professional drinker in the sense that my job was ambassador for their premium brandies. I was always around booze and my job was to talk about the brands and make sure that they were profiled to the public, before the age of the “influencer”. DL: Speaking of influencers, I see on Instagram that you are rating beers, not as a judge or a brewer but as a beer drinker. Have you cut it off at the top beers in the country or what is the plan? BK: No, not at all, I stood in a bottle store in December, T his edition, Dave plays a round of golf at Parkview Golf Course with Ben Karpinksi , former sports head on Gareth Cliff’s show, sports content generator, creative director of Retroactive and lover of beer. pre-New Year’s, and saw a great selection of beers so I came up with the idea of #NewBeersResolution and decided to document every beer that I taste on social media. Every time I have a new beer, I take a picture of it, give it some thought and put it on my feed with the hashtag. It’s just a cool thing to do. I think that every beer just has its own story and I love profiling that. DL: You’ve done the zero alcohol beers too, what do you think of those? BK: Heineken Zero is lovely because it still tastes like a beer; Castle Free is nice but it’s too soft for me; Bavaria is alright and I haven’t tried the Holsten yet. I have tried the Devil’s Peak Zero to Hero and it also actually tastes like a beer. DL: Do you have a favourite beer? BK: The great thing is that if you like a particular beer you have the opportunity to have it at a specific location, so for me it’s geographically based. I know that if I go to Street Bar for instance, they have Hoegaarden on tap and that to me is a very special beer. It comes in a huge glass with a great pour, whereas Grolsch is a great winter beer for me. There are also certain beers that I gravitate to after a long round of golf, like a Castle Lite. Follow Ben Karpinski at @thebounce on Instagram to see his take on the beer he is drinking.
