From The Editor T he other day, I was sitting in a restaurant with my husband and son, coming up with ways to occupy the ve year old while we waited for our burgers to arrive. Rather than resort to YouTube, we opted to play “what’s your favourite…?” Having gone through movies, TV shows, colours, foods, bands and shapes (when was the last time you thought about your favourite shape? Mine’s a rhombus by the way), we nally found an answer that all three of us agreed on. e question: What is your favourite country? e answer: why, this one of course. You often hear torrents of negativity about South Africa, uttered by people intent on leaving to seek a better life in the tundra of Canada or the drizzly all-round clusterf**k that is Brexit Britain. I’m not going to suggest that this country doesn’t have a few problems, but man I love it here. e people, the food, the raw natural beauty, the work-to-live not live-to- work philosophy and yes, of course, the weather (after all, the grass is only greener when it rains for 300-plus days a year…) September is Heritage Month in SA – a time to celebrate all that is unique and fabulous about our country, and we have tried to do just that in the pages of this issue. We’re taking you on a road trip into the Kalahari, challenging you to brew something uniquely South African, sipping some of our botanical heritage and most importantly of all, shining a light on our traditional and sadly oft-overlooked brew, umqombothi. We hope the articles in this issue make you feel proud to be South African, whether you were born here or like me, opted to move here. And whether you’re sipping on a cold Castle lager, a buchu-infused saison or a batch of freshly brewed sorghum beer, we wish all of our readers a very happy Heritage Month. In love with Mzansi Cheers! Lucy Corne EDITOR @LucyCorne ontapmag.co.za | Spring 2019 | 1
