SHACKLETON BREWERY DIZZY ALE | 4.5% ABV BREW REVIEWS PANELISTS: Megan Gemmell, Brian Leopold, Troye May, Chris Roth, Michelle Seale, Olga de Smidt, Dion Van Huyssteen, and Chantell Van Niekerk. 3.7 The aroma on this beer gives an initial malt-forward bready note, followed by the hops bringing in citrus and guava pulp. It smells extremely good, and instantly makes one crave a taste. The flavour brought on the same notes as the aroma, but it was more hop-forward this time, and the guava became quite prominent, with the citrus being more prominent in the aftertaste. A very sessionable treat of a drink that went down fantastically. EDITOR’S NOTE: We at On Tap have made some changes to our Brew Reviews section. We have established a panel, currently consisting of eight individuals, who will be our go-to beer reviewers, and who all have demonstrated experience reviewing or judging beers. Panel members will not necessarily review a beer for every issue, but all names will be listed regardless. Also, if any brewery would like a beer of theirs to be reviewed, they will need to contact On Tap editors directly (editor@ontapmagazine.com) . CEDERBERG BREWERY VOERTSEK IPA | 6% ABV 4.0 As the bottle hisses at the bottle opener, you are instantly lured to the florally citrus notes exploding from the bottle. There is also a good backbone of caramel dancing in the background, which balances the citrus with sweetness. Upon pouring the beer, you will notice this beer is crystal clear and a very alluring medium gold; a long-lasting head follows each sip to the bottom of the glass. The caramel flavour perfectly balances the bitterness of the fruity hops; the high bitterness dissipates into a sensation of crispness, leaving a lingering bitter-sweet taste. As IPAs go, this beer lends itself to the East Coast variety, with a well-balanced aroma, slightly malt-leaning flavour and an easy drinking all-year beer. 52 | Autumn 2024 | ontapmag.co.za
