The Beer Association of South Africa (BASA) takes pride in its representation of traditional beer interests. In late 2023, United National Breweries (UNB) joined BASA, securing a seat at the table alongside existing members: the Craft Brewers Association South Africa (CBASA), HEINEKEN Beverages, and South African Breweries (SAB). BASA enthusiastically welcomed this development, expressing in a statement, "UNB holds a special place in South African culture. It is heartening to have them become part of the BASA family. This means BASA now represents all beer manufacturers in South Africa, presenting a unified voice on issues ranging from regulatory matters to promoting beer culture, highlighting the economic contribution of our industry, and advocating for responsible beer consumption among South Africans." UNB stands out as the primary manufacturer of traditional African sorghum beer, known as Umqombothi, marketed under beloved brands such as Chibuku, Ijuba, and Tlokwe. These brands are produced at three breweries and distributed through a network of depots across South Africa. Traditional African Beer has a rich history in all South African cultures, and UNB plays a crucial role in preserving this heritage. "Umqombothi is widely used in traditional ceremonies, commanding enormous respect and bringing people together. It is a part of South African heritage and culture, also serving as the daily beer of choice for many," says Gary Reade, UNB’s Managing Director. Founded in the early 1920s, UNB has established a significant presence in the beverage sector over the past century. With nearly 1,000 employees, the company generates approximately R1 billion in revenue annually. Reade emphases that the challenges the beer industry faces in the current economic climate is best faced together as a group. "UNB is glad to be part of an association that shares our interests and is focused on building a better future. We all want to keep our industry sustainable and work towards improvements for our customers, employees, and communities." The world of beer is one of vibrancy and variety, with the taste of Umqombothi standing as one of the many unique beer experiences South Africa has to offer.
