In the last edition of theOnTapmagazine write-up, wementioned that BASA was a proud sponsor of a new award category at the Intervarsity Brewing competition held in October 2022 – namely the “Mentor of the Year” award, which is a new award that acknowledges a mentor who has gone above and beyond in showing leadership to their team and their commitment to the success of the intervarsity competition. Mr Louis Ramoba, mentor to the University of Limpopo intervarsity team, was the winner of the inaugural award as a result of the dedication he has shown to his students and for often going above and beyond to assist them with their studies. Mr Ramoba holds a BSc Degree in Microbiology from the University of Limpopo, BSc Honours in Microbiology from Unisa, as well as a Master’s degree which he is currently busy with from the University of Limpopo. The prize was a 60 litre single vessel microbrewery, which members of the BASA team were excited to officially handover on the 20th of January at an awards ceremony attended by representatives from SAB, the University of Limpopo and Zwakala Breweries. BASA hopes to continue sponsoring this award at future intervarsity competitions in order to help promote future generations of student brewers and recognise the mentors who are playing a part in this critical part in this process. As the South African enthusiasm for beer evolves, we look forward to contributing towards the transformation and development of young craft brewers, which will in turn create more jobs in the industry. We wish Mr Ramoba and his students well for the upcoming year and hope they will enjoy crafting new and exciting brews in their new microbrewery.
