Patricia Pillay It’s the start of a new year, and the Beer Association of South Africa has kicked off with a bang by hosting and partnering on a number of events that promote and celebrate both up-and-coming and established brewers. One of our main focuses in 2023 is continuing to promote and pave the way for the beer industry to flourish in South Africa, in particular developing and empowering future generations of brewers to be successful. BASA was therefore proud to start the year off by visiting Limpopo University to officially handover a prize to Mr Ramoba, who won the Mentor of the Year” award at the Intervarsity Brewing competition held in October 2022. This was followed by two Brew Routes weekends, where we visited world class craft breweries in Franschhoek and Bloemfontein. We were also extremely excited to celebrate another category of local beer makers, namely traditional marula brewers in rural KwaZulu-Natal by partnering with the KZN Liquor Authority to host the annual Umthayi Marula Brewing on the 10th of February 2023. And of course, we also had a great deal of fun as the main sponsor of the seventh annual South African National Beer Day, which hosted more than 100 events around the country that celebrated beer as South Africa’s favourite beverage. We hope that you enjoy reading about all these activities in OnTap this month. We certainly have a lot more planned for the coming year and if you are interested in receiving more regular updates on what the BASA team is up to, we encourage you to follow our social media page.
