The KZN Liquor Board, Beer Association of South Africa (BASA) as well as the Pro Beach Soccer League came together over the recent festive season to launch a Festive Beach Sports Campaign in November and December of last year. The campaign was launched at South Beach in Durban on 26 November 2021. At the opening ceremony, Acting CEO of the KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Board, Bheki Mbanjwa, shared how the beach sports campaign was an important platform for the Liquor Board’s “Don’t Drink and Swim” campaign. This campaign is run by the local provincial Liquor Board on a yearly basis across all beaches in KwaZulu-Natal, while throngs of holiday makers make their way to the shores for their holidays. BASA CEO, Patricia Pillay, believes that these events provide a critical opportunity to share the need for responsible drinking with beach goers. The festive beach and sports campaign also afforded representatives of our alcohol industry with a platform through which they could encourage citizens to get vaccinated, with mobile vaccination stations being set up at the soccer games for its duration throughout the month of December. Pro Beach Soccer League CEO, Zweli Sapula, felt excited to play a role in the promotion of such an important campaign for the provincial Liquor Board and local beer sector. Spatula shared that together, we can drive educational and Corporate Social Investment programs, to ensure the development and creation of economic and employment opportunities through sport. President of the Pro Beach Soccer League, Gordon Masondo, felt especially proud of the players of the league last year, who has just recently returned from representing South Africa at the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup. BASA would like to thank the representatives from the Pro Beach Soccer League and the KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Board, for working together towards the roll-out of such a successful beach sports campaign last year. We look forward towards hosting many more campaigns of this nature in the months to come, with the hope of developing similar relationships with other provincial liquor boards in future.
