STYLE GUIDE GREAT EXPORTATIONS It began life as a smoky brown ale, dominated the globe, disappeared from view and was revived by craft brewers. Lucy Corne delves into the fascinating history, the flavours and the various versions of the humble porter. A bout two years ago I was back in the UK and spent a day visiting the breweries of Manchester. On our hit list of course, was Cloudwater, whose whitewashed, sterile taproom and weird space age soundtrack conjured up images of Barbarella (but without the nipples). It was a particular shock to the system as we had just arrived from a brewery that was utterly unpretentious and with at least one foot placed rmly in the past. e brewery was Beer Nouveau, wedged under the train tracks southeast of the city centre in an area speckled with microbreweries.
