One of the best is Mantis & Moon in Umzumbe, a great spot for those who surf – or want to start. There is well-equipped, well- priced and well-situated accommodation to be found in the area’s various nature reserves, usually bookable through KZN Wildlife. Sometimes though, you just need to do as the great Tom Haverford from Parks & Recreation says and treat yo’self. Tucked way down south – in fact so far south it’s officially over the border in the Eastern Cape – is the Wild Coast Sun . This is the hotel par excellence for anyone on a family holiday, regardless of your kids’ ages. The coastal location is magnificent, with a wild and surprisingly deserted beach fronting the hotel. In fact, this place is all about water. There’s a huge pool above the beach, a kids’ splash pool, an indoor pool and best of all, an impressive waterpark a five minute walk from your room. If you’re looking for something a bit less commercial, head to the Riverside Beach Bar. Food here is limited to (really good) boerie rolls, which come with excellent cocktails to be sipped overlooking the Umtamvuna River. From here you can take boat trips, water ski or just watch others having a bash at it while you sip on your mojito.
